When We’re Left Behind: The Dragonfly Story

Updated: May 1

When we are all together: going through life, we don't focus on the hardest part of it - loss of a loved one

Experiencing Loss: when we are younger & what it means.

Fighting the Inevitable: we usually have our first taste of loss without fully understanding what it is.

Our Watchers: remember that death is a construct of human existence, one we must all face. But when we lose someone we love, those memories shared; the stories we tell will always keep that person alive. Consciousness never disappears.

Those Who Are Never Forgotten: just as night follows day, winter follows summer, death follows life, and life follows death. These are all a part of our uncompromising, unbending, and unyielding existence. The love we feel every time we bring a loved one to mind, that person is alive and with us. Death isn't an ending, just a punctuation, and those there are connecting with us through love.

When we are all together

Down below the surface of a quiet pond lived a little colony of water bugs. They were a happy colony, living far away from the sun. For many months, they were very busy; scurrying over the soft mud on the bottom of the pond. The murky water was all still and green. That’s the world they knew. The same color, the same smell, the same murky bottom. That’s all they knew in their life. There was no color or smell, no sunshine or rain. They started to notice that every once in a while, one of their colonies seemed to lose interest in going about. Clinging to the stem of a pond lily it gradually moved out of sight and was seen no more.

Experiencing loss

"Look!" said one of the water bugs to another, "one of our colonies is climbing up the lily stalk. Where do you think she is going?"

Up, up, up it slowly went and even as they watched, the water bug disappeared from sight. Its friends waited and waited but it didn't return. "That's funny!" said one water bug to another. "Wasn't she happy here?" asked a second... "Where do you suppose she went?" wondered a third. No one had an answer. They were greatly puzzled. Finally one of the water bugs, a leader in the colony, gathered its friends together. "I have an idea" "The next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk must promise to come back and tell us where he or she went and why." "We promise", they said solemnly.

Fighting the inevitable

One spring day, not long after, the very water bug who had suggested the plan found himself climbing up the lily stalk. Up, up, up, he went. Before he knew what was happening, he had broken through the surface of the water and fallen onto the broad, green lily pad above. His skin fell off like the leaves in the fall and out came this amazing color shape and these strange things on its back. When he awoke, he looked about with surprise. He couldn't believe what he saw. A startling change had come to his old body. His movement revealed four silver wings and a long tail. Even as he struggled, he felt an impulse to move his wings. The warmth of the sun soon dried the moisture from the new body. He moved his wings again and suddenly found himself up above the water. He had become a dragonfly!! Swooping and dipping in great curves, he flew through the air. He felt exhilarated in the new atmosphere. By and by the new dragonfly lighted happily on a lily pad to rest. Then it was that he chanced to look below to the bottom of the pond. Why, he was right above his old friends, the water bugs!

Our watchers from above

There they were scurrying around, just as he had been doing some time before. The dragonfly remembered the promise: "the next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk will come back and tell where he or she went and why." Without thinking, the dragonfly darted down. Suddenly he hit the surface of the water and bounced away. Now that he was a dragonfly, he could no longer go into the water. "I can't return!" he said in dismay. "At least, I tried. But I can't keep my promise. Even if I could go back, not one of the water bugs would know me in my new body. I guess I'll just have to wait until they become dragonflies too. Then they'll understand what has happened to me, and where I went." And the dragonfly winged off happily into its wonderful new world of sun and air. After one then another then another climbed out there were two. Then there were two… One told the last I’m going up, I will go halfway and not climb past the waterline. But as that little body reaches the top of the waterline staining to see what a ripping was up there came through and the air touched its back, as this happens, he floated out of sight of the green murky bottom. The skin he has known was shed and the most amazing thing happened, just like the rest he flew around and saw the most amazing colors, most intoxicating smells felt the warmth on his wings. Within a few minutes he had almost forgot the green murky bottom, but he remembered the last of her brother and dove in as hard as he could but bounce off the top. He saw his brother looking up at him. He knew he couldn’t see past the wearers edge . He spend so long clawing and flapping and digging to tell him it was ok….but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't get through.

Those of us who are left behind

All the other dragon fly’s saw his dismay and came over. They all spend the next few days watching as the last one was giving up. He stopped eating stopped moving and spend all day and night staring up that stick. To their horror he couldn’t move, and depression washed over him the way the water washed over the stick. They couldn’t help. They couldn’t tell him of the amazing sights the colors that filled their sights so beautiful as far as they could see. They took turns keeping a vigil watching as the last little one got seeker and weaker. They watched in horror as he laid down, he was so week and didn’t rise again. If he only knew the beauty that they still didn’t understand he too would have joined them. The feet of the unknown left his final days too week to move. As he passed on the other dragonflies couldn’t believe how much they wanted him to climb but he never found his courage….they never wanted to cause sadness never wanted this outcome. It hurt them with every second watching him waste away as they all waited for him to rise. If he only found his courage to climb that little branch, they would be reunited in the most beautiful world any could ever imagine. Don’t be sad for our loved ones who climb the stick. Rejoice and remember they are there waiting for us to find out wings so we could be United in a world better than any of us could imagine.

A pain we can never forget and those who are never forgotten

There is life. After death. Matter cannot die. Love will always be there watching abs waiting for your time. Don’t give up for that causes pain that no one should bear. Death is as much a part of life as birth, as spring is to winter, as day is to night. Never stop loving the ones who go before us because they will never stop waiting for and loving us. Watching and waiting and wanting to see our joy, no one chooses our time but when it comes, we rejoice with the ones who are waiting, and time will eventually bring us all together. Never ever rush this process life has lessons we need to learn, and we won’t learn them leaving this world too soon . Love each other and hold each other close, our love will always keep us together. Remember we are one!
